Welcome to ‘Thinking Photography,’ an enriching course designed to unravel the captivating history of photography while delving into the essential techniques and conceptual frameworks employed by skilled photographers.
This course goes beyond the technical aspects of taking pictures; it aims to cultivate a deeper understanding of the art form encouraging students to explore complex themes, expand their visual literacy, and consider photography’s role in shaping reality to become thoughtful and perceptive photographers.
By engaging with both historical and contemporary case studies, students will refine their abilities to analyse, interpret, and craft images with intention and depth. By exploring the evolution of photography and dissecting the strategies utilised by renowned practitioners, students will not only enhance their technical skills but also develop a keen eye for composition, storytelling, and visual communication.
‘Thinking Photography’ is crafted with the goal of transforming participants into more than just photographers – it seeks to empower them as mindful and creative image-makers, fostering a profound appreciation for the medium’s artistic potential.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The first three weeks focuses on the evolution of photography developing foundational skills. The remaining three weeks aim at deepening students critical thinking, emphasizing the power of photography as a medium of visual expression, social commentary, and personal narrative.
This course runs for six sessions total, over six consecutive weeks at our Lismore campus. It is suitable for people of all experience levels, from beginner to advanced. While there is a very small practical component and practical skills will be discussed, the emphasis will be on critical thinking and conceptual insight.
TRAINER
Raimond de Weerdt holds both a Bachelor Visual Art (photography) from Sydney University and a Masters degree from the University of NSW in Digital Media. He has been actively working in this space for more than twenty five years and says ”In my mind there is nothing more exciting than creating photographs that ‘speak’. In my experience it is better to think about photography rather than get obsessed with all the buttons, once you think about photography the buttons are easy”.
Raimond is also a published author with his work titled ‘Creatives of the NSW Northern Rivers’ – a collection of 340 studio portraits of creative individuals that reside and work in the Northern Rivers.
